20 Years Ago #WordsMatter

20 Years Ago #WordsMatter
20 Years ago I had passed my 10th board exams and had chosen 'Science' as my preferred stream of further studies. When I think about myself then, I realize how serious I was about life. There was zeal and a desire to do something. I was a sincere and hardworking student and academically I did pretty decently for myself. But did life turn out to be the way I envisioned during those days? Well, not very much. There have been detours and curveballs along the way and I believe I am where I am meant to be (maybe), but not where I thought I would be.

Come to think about it, I think most of us given a chance to go back in life would want to do certain things differently; certain things that might even change the course of our lives. At some point or the other, we have all said if only I had that chance, if only I had this opportunity earlier if only this and if only that. The list can be unending.

The truth is - things always seem clearer and easier in hindsight. And no matter how we wish we could go back in time and change things, be assured that we would make some other mistake or face some other challenges and life would take its own course.

I too have my long list of things that I could do differently. Most of us can't really say if we are living the life of our dreams - some parts may be better, some worse.

But I have also come to realize that things will keep happening whether we like it or not. So instead of thinking about the what if's - we have to learn to take things in their stride, learn the lessons, make newer goals, work towards them and move on with life.

My learning in all these years can be summed in this line.

Do the things that are important to you no matter how insignificant it might seem to others.

We all want others to see the world as we see it. That is a problem. Not everyone will and that is absolutely ok. Your dreams are your own, so only you have to own it and work on it. Things will fall in place eventually and even if it doesn't, you will have a new perspective to look at it or a new lesson to learn.

  1. Completely agree. Life goes on. Instead of cribbing, better to take life in our hands and be accountable.

  2. Yes, we either live a life of regret or we choose to be happy and content with what we have even if our achievements or lack of them don't fit in with other people's notions for us!

  3. Wow this was a great post. I also often regret for some decisions taken 20 years back. I feel sad that things didnot work out as planned. But yes as you mentioned that instead of thinking of the what ifs we should learn to take things in our stride. I learnt this the hard way but I seem happier and at peace with myself.

  4. I completely agree with you Jyoti, especially on the last few lines you shared.
That's how we all feel, that if we could have done things differently life would have been better. But it's really not how things happen. We still would make mistakes and reach some other place we never imagined.

Best it would be to just accept life the way it is and look for the beautiful!

  5. completely agree Jyoti, in fact in all these years I have come to understand that, whatever small thing it may be, if you believe in it, put your full potential in developing it and work on it consistently- it will grow into a great thing - may be a job, a product, a work or a hobby

  6. Oh yes, life always appears to be clearer and easier in hindsight. There is no point in dwelling in the past, especially the part where we committed mistakes or where good things did not happen to us because there is hardly anything we can do about it now. It is wise to stay in the present of course untill a writing prompt turns up making us ponder about 20 years ago :)

  7. I agree that things seem so much clearer in hindsight. Perhaps I wouldn't have been a science student at all had I really known my leanings. But there's little value in What Ifs and regrets. We cannot change the past so the best thing to do is to look ahead and make the most of what we have.

  8. I agree! Things always seem clearer in hindsight! Wish we could do what we want as the moment unfolds instead of repenting in hindsight.

  9. Well said Jyoti. We have to own up to our decisions and not let our self fall into the trap of regret.

  10. I am glad I am able to live the quote. But frankly, it's a privilege to be able to do things that matter to us as life doesn't give a choice to many other souls.

  11. Doing things that are important to you is what matters. It is good that you have learnt this early in life. It is something I am still coming to terms with.

  12. Who has time for regrets and dwelling on "what ifs" and "if onlys"? The key is to dwell on what is and what we can make happen in the future, not to get "stuck" in a past that was or never was. Your summarized learning up there is the best advice! It's YOUR life, and it's the only one you're guaranteed, with no known end date, so enjoy EVERY day while you can.

  13. Living a life without regrets is the best way to make the best out of it. We all have one life and we should enjoy it to the fullest and know that at every moment we did the best we could.

  14. You are right that in hindsight - things look simple. But when we are going through all that, they are hard. We can only do what we can. Right?
Thanks Jyoti. This was an honest read and I was able to relate.
